Abstract | The Book of Mormon has been met with skepticism since its publication in 1830. Those not willing to accept Joseph Smith's account of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon have sought alternative explanations for its origins. These alternative theories (that Joseph Smith plagiarized certain books or manuscripts) have persisted, but suffer from serious evidentiary problems. The inability of critics to come to a unified consensus as to how Joseph Smith supposedly pulled off a hoax like the Book of Mormon is evidence for its divine authenticity. |
